Kurier by itifonhom Kurier by itifonhom
The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, also known as Kurier to the Allies was a German all-metal four-engine monoplane originally developed by Focke-Wulf as a long-range airliner. A Japanese request for a long-range maritime patrol aircraft led to military versions that saw service with the Luftwaffe as long-range reconnaissance and anti-shipping/maritime patrol bomber aircraft. The Luftwaffe also made extensive use of the Fw 200 as a transport.
It achieved some success as a commerce raider before the advent of long-range RAF Coastal Command aircraft and CAM ships eliminated its threat.  (Wikipedia)

Just a quick rendering here, model by Pedro Caparros, C4D and PS as usual.

Nice.  You did a good job working with the shades white on grey.  Keeping the object in focus apart from the background without looking too blended is hard to pull off.

The real end of the Condor was the Escort Carriers or 'Jeep Carriers'.

Museums also offer a wide variety of photos.  Many museums are getting extensive private collection donated by families of vets that have passed away.  The San Diego Air museum is a good one.  Also the nation Museum of the United Stated Air Force has a link set up to find other museums, if you can find it.

Superb work on this FW-200 Condor! It is my fave German bomber due to it being one of the few 4 engined bomber and it was one of the few planes supporting the navy and it is a beauty.
Not a very strong plane and weak arnament and weak bombload so it is far from being the best, but Germany could had developed it further but Goring never took that seriously, good for europe in the end :P
Superb! :D

Italy had the Piaggio 108 4-engine heavy bomber, but never built very many of them. Some were mounted on pontoons and others were used for torpedo attacks.

Nice one. I've often wondered why the Germans never developed a heavy bomber force. This would have been an ideal plane to start it with.

Well, Germans did develop this kind of forces some years before war. The famous "Bomber A" project under support of general Walther Wever create two very good bombers prototypes, the Ju 89 and Do 19. But after death of Wever in 1936 that whole idea collapse without his support. German Luftwaffe commanders push then idea of only light and medium bombers in direct support of land components of Reich forces. Of course they receive strong support from Wehrmacht that was interested mainly in weapons that would support land formations.

Some of the ideas of Wever were still alive, Junkers build famous Ju 190 from parts of Ju 89 project, then it was redesign in to long range patrol plane, the Ju 290 and even the prototype of Amerika Bomber, the Ju 390. Of course there was also He 177 that was only heavy bomber of Luftwaffe in times of war, almost 1.200 build. It was not the best design, lot of problems with mechanical parts and engines.

Fw 200 was improvisation, never truly fit in to the military role. Whole airframe was too weak and in many cases Condors tear off tails section when landing.

Well, I didn't know about this. I just looked them up, it's very interesting. But if the Germans were going to conquer the world, surely they needed heavy bombers?

If they planed the world conquest then yes, probably they would need some heavy bombers. But Third Reich never planed this, they were fixed on Drang nach Osten idea. Whole war in Europe was only a prelude, action to protect Reich flanks in the future war against Soviets. In that case you don't relay need heavy bombers because medium bombers are enough for that task. Heavy's need more materials, more crew and more fuel then medium ones, you can put two or three in price of one heavy. And in the early and middle time of war that idea was correct. Germans start to feel need of heavy bombers in time of operation Barbarossa, when Soviets start to move factory's behind Ural chain ( as you notice Ju 89 and Do 19 were called the "Ural bombers" because they would attack targets in chain and behind of it ) and medium bombers of Luftwaffe just don't had that operation range. But as Germans don't used strategic bombardment tactic it was rather comprehensibly.

Many people think that Third Reich was on the road of world domination, conquerors of all continents, this is just big old propaganda story. Third Reich planed only political and economical domination in Europe with partition of France and military control over lands of former USSR, maybe also in India if Great Britain would not sight the peace treaty. Also they want to take back old colony's in Africa. And that's all.

Only for fighting the industrial countries. Most countries back then weren't as industrialized, afaik. Strategic bombers were limited in their ability back then to hit things smaller than cities. Nowadays the few heavy bombers that exist can perform surgical strikes by carrying a bunch of cruise missiles. The Allies appear to have had the tendency to use Fighters, Light and Medium Bombers to attack tactical targets such as dug in troops, railways, bridges, Army formations.
The Luftwaffe seemed to want to use a bomber that was more multirole capable. Like the He-111 which was used to bomb industrial areas, ground support, as a Torpedo Bomber, and a few existed that could be armed with the V-1 Glide Bomb.

All true. But I can't help thinking they would have been well served to bomb the Soviet factories in the Urals etc.

The Luftwaffe did operate some B-17s. However they used them mostly for training their fighter pilots, reconnaissance, and as transports.

So I heard. I understand there were some they used in "false colours" to trick the USAAF. I don't know how true that was.

They did, they would infiltrate US bomber formations and would transmit their movements and altitude. It worked until the US Bomber Crews created a system to keep out and fire on "strangers".
