Nick on the run by itifonhom Nick on the run by itifonhom
The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (屠龍, "Dragon Slayer") was a two-seat, twin-engine fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. The army gave it the designation "Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter"; the Allied reporting name was "Nick". These aircraft turned out to be great ant-bomber interceptors, just like the Me-110 in Europe. But sometimes, instead of hunters they turned to be prey.
In this fully fictional scene, two "Nicks" get surprised by Corsairs and try to evade, which probably won´t work. Just another of my fun images here, nothing special, just had some time to kill and wanted to apply new things to old experience, as always, C4D and Photoshop.

Actually Ki-45 eventually could outturn Corsair, because of better weight to wing surface ratio. Corsair was known to be quite bad in turn-fights and were rather used for attacking on streight high speed runs or boom-and-zoom. What probably Toryu pilots would (should) have done in this situation, is to use split maneuver (half barrel roll, and then loop). Corsairs would be unable to follow (and probably if their pilots weren't idiots did would not even try).

BTW there should be a gun inside the nose aswell (in addition to the gun below the plane). There were 4 modifications of Toryu
Ki-45 ko - got 2 Ho-103 machine guns in the nose + 20 mm Ho-5 cannon on right side below the fuselage
Ki-45 Otsu - got 1 37 mm gun in the nose + 1 20 mm Ho-5 cannon on right side below the fuselage
Ki-45 Hei - got 1 37 mm gun in the nose + 2 20 mm Ho-5 cannon monted between cockpits under 45 degree angle (Schräge Musik)
Ki-45 Tei - got 1 37 mm gun in the nose + 1 20 mm Ho-5 cannon on right side below the fuselage (like on Otsu, but ammo increased)

The quality of scene itself is beyond beyond all praise.

Not all variants had nose guns. It's not my model but I can say it's quite accurate.....

So there was a variant with only the one underbelly gun then? That's weird. Usually it's either a pair of 12.7mms in the nose or a combination of a 37mm cannon with 20mm in the nose.

Now that I take a second look at it, you can be right actually! There's a slight confusion about the different variants and I had the impression the ventral gun was standard with the nose and "scgraege musik" gun on and off but maybe the nose guns were standard after all. Like I said, not my model, I just did the textures and the rendering but thank you for mentioning this, will add them for any future images. You got a sharp eye my friend!

I volunteer at the Palm Springs Air Museum and I like to do my research on Japanese aircraft. The Toryu is one of my favorites and sadly there are no more flying or even intact. Last I heard the only remaining Toryu fuselage is housed in the Dayton Ohio museum where my friend lives by. Also: my best friend's name is Nick ;)
